Bakers is a great Main Street restaurant. Known for its breakfast crowd during the summer, this eatery is a great start to your vacation morning. You may want to plan an early start as crowds gather quickly. If you don't mind the wait there are plenty of local shops including the birthplace of Pepsi just up the block. Sit back, relax, grab some Jo and a huge waffle! Enjoy!

We had a nice lunch here today. The club sandwich was really superb. The chicken salad was nice but it needs crackers or bread served with it. Friendly and cheap. Service was average. Did not sample the baked goods.

Going back for the second time for their warm soft & sweet cinnamon rolls. Oh yeah and their buttered maple syrup too.

Took the family here July 4th weekend and everyone loved it. Great service, and the southern entrees were reminiscent of your Mom's cooking. Really delicious dessert choices....recommend the key Lime pie!

Always fast, friendly and delicious. Whenever I'm back in town I always get the French toast. The butter syrup is what makes it pop.

Really looked forward to eating here after reading reviews and looking at their menu. While the food was good, nothing above average. Even on a very busy Saturday morning, most of our food came out lukewarm at best. Service was very fast and very friendly. Maybe a little quality control would lift the quality. Too bad. We really wanted to love this place. May try again for lunch next time.

I tried this restaurant with family on a recent trip to New Bern on recommendations from Yelp. My family and I ordered a few dishes to share since we wanted to try the Dutch Potatoes, Sweet Potato pancakes and cinnamon buns. Everything was amazing as reviews promised and the staff was incredibly courteous, attentive and informative about the area. We liked it so much that we returned for breakfast a few days later and in that occasion tried the omelets, another hit! It was my birthday and the host procured cinnamon buns all around. So thoughtful! On weekends if you want to be sure to get in quickly, my advice is to arrive between 7 and 9 am.

Best place to have breakfast on a Saturday morning! Love that they will scramble their omelettes. You think it would be an easy request, but many places say no way! The meatlover's omelette was awesome. And the Baker's Potatoes? Too good!

Very friendly staff, nice, clean location. Had a bit of a wait on a Monday morning, but it is a holiday weekend so no big deal! They will text you when your table is ready so you can explore the shops close by. I ordered the sweet potato pancakes. They were light fluffy and sweet, very good. I'm generally not a sweet breakfast person but if you like the sweeter type I recommend. There Dutch potatoes are Amazing...I couldn't deny myself a side of this yummy goodness. My husband ordered steak and eggs....steak was a perfect medium rare!!! I would highly recommend trying this place out to visitors and locals alike!

This place is great for breakfast/brunch/lunch! Friendly service and fresh food! The butter syrup will blow your mind! Sometimes the wait is super long, but it's worth it!

I am a long time resident of New Bern and have been a fan of the Baker's Square/Kitchen since it originally opened as a charming Mennonite restaurant many years ago. You can't go wrong with the the home-made French toast and butter syrup. In addition, the fresh buns, breads, etc. are heavenly and turkey sausage is actually an option on the menu. Plan to arrive early, especially on weekends and holidays, but the 15-30 minute wait is worth every minute. ENJOY!!

Went twice so far during our vacation, great food , consistent, great veggie omelette great option for vegetarians like my wife. Had the farmers breakfast, good stuff, good coffee. Efficient staff , all nice and helpful! Nice overall place, cozy...

Best breakfast in town! The Dutch potatoes and French toast are superb! Quick service and fairly quick seating.

Food ok, service sloooooooow. Our family of 5 stepped in for breakfast around 9am thinking we could have a good, leisurely breakfast before meeting our friends at 10. Right on the first count, wrong on the 2nd. The breakfast sandwiches were well prepared, with delicious sausage, biscuits, and precisely prepared eggs. The kids' waffles, yogurt and country ham were also tasty. However, though we ordered around 9:10, nothing arrived until 9:45 and it took until 10:15 to get out the door. Plan for at least 90 minutes if you choose to start the day here.

Best place in New Bern, everything was delicious, the service was very professional, it is worth the wait, i promise you'll not regret coming to this restaurant

I love the food here but the service was horrible my server didn't come check on me and my mom forgot items and brought me the check early. I recommend the place but this one guy was horrible and ruined my mom's mothers day

We ate here before leaving to go back home. It was busy but we only had to wait a couple of minutes. The food came fast, was really good. If possible- get the Dutch potatoes, but I also heard their French toast was good too.

  • Kate T.

Two stars is more than enough. For the life of me, I still cannot explain why this place was packed on a Sunday. The only thing I can think of is that it was probably the only place open. Seriously. The food wasn't bad. I've have similar or better food plenty of other places for less money though. So it certainly isn't the grub that has people coming in the door. And the service was AWFUL!!! We waited forever for coffee. Coffee!! How hard is that? It was slow and frustrating to sit there and wait for nothing special. Not going back ever again!!!

I had breakfast here on our recent drive through North Carolina. The waitress was remarkably friendly and answered many questions we had about the region. I had a single pancake (I think it was pumpkin, but am not 100% sure). I got sides of very nice bacon and an egg. They brought us some kind of butter syrup mixture that was delicious, too. I didn't see anything like it at any other breakfast place we stopped at in our travels through the state. My travel companion ordered a big breakfast that came with something called "Dutch potatoes." They were like a cheesy coarsely mashed potato. I loved them. He wasn't as crazy about them as he had been expecting something like home fries, so I ate most of them with great pleasure. This was our best breakfast on our 9 day trip!

I walked in the door and immediately thought this place was going to serve some wonderful food. although it was busy, my wife and I was seated in less then 10 minutes. The decor and environment, to include the staff, was very pleasant and set the mood just right. I had the country fried steak, eggs over medium, dutch potatoes, and a sweet potato biscuit. Everything was full of flavor and tastyness. The country fried steak was cooked just right. The over medium eggs were cooked just right. The Dutch potatoes were nice and cheesy and the sweet potato biscuit was fluffy heaven. The only thing that I could complain about are the prices, such as the $1 for 1 extra egg.

  • Steve S.

Love this place! Great food and fast FRIENDLY service!! We found Bakers as we walked through town and also had read about it. There is always a wait but you can walk around the adjoining stores or go across the street and relax on the park benches under the trees and they'll text you when your table is ready.

I have family in New Bern, and they love this restaurant, but it was just so bad last time! I ordered an omelet with cheese, onions, and ham. Simple, right? They bring it out to me with a slice of melted cheese sitting on TOP of the omelet!?! Omelets are like, the easiest thing to make. I could make one 10 times better than this. There were way too many onions in it--like full mouthfuls of onions. So, so gross. It was terrible. My eating partner got ribeye steak and poached eggs--the daily special. I warned him not to order something as ambitious as steak, so it's his own fault! He said the steak was tough but the eggs and biscuit were ok. The best thing, by far, was a little pile of Dutch potatoes that were quite tasty. I got a chocolate chip cookie and it was good. The cinnamon rolls look great, but I didn't try one. I was talking to a family member later who told me I just ordered the "wrong things". So....don't get the ribeye steak and omelet (or the fruit & yogurt bowl, which I got last time and was still frozen).

  • Christine B.

SUPER SLOW service, took 20 min to get our drinks, took another 30 after we got our drinks to get our food. NOT ENOUGH SERVERS for the amount of tables and people that are in the restaurant. Everything was pretty average tasting, only thing that was different and in a good way were the dutch potatoes, they were delicious. But honestly everything else is comparable to the waffle house and or IHOP.. Not impressed.

    (3)
  • Cathleen C.

Wonderful service, delicious food. Cinnamon rolls are awesome! Everything is homemade.

    (5)
  • Morgan M.

It's average. The chicken salad sandwich was different... The consistency is not chunks of chicken, but literally more of a chicken paste which I found strange. It was okay though, but I wouldn't order it again in the future. I will say that the apple pie was on point though.

  • Jonathan V.

Was there pretty early Sunday morning and it was not busy. Was seated promptly and brought coffee and water. Service was pretty good except for the coffee refills where were almost non-existent. had the french toast based on a recommendation. meh. Straight up mediocre. Won't go back.

    (2)
  • Michael B.

Did not meet my expectations. Long wait, mediocre food, terrible service. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came rare; I ordered eggs over medium and it came over easy. The service was slow and inaccurate; we ordered bacon on a burger and it didn't happen. We won't be coming back.

    (2)
  • Hugh R.

Had breakfast early Saturday morning. Was average at best. My wife had a ham and cheese omelette. It was tiny and on top of that looked like one egg that was flattened on the grill with some ham thrown in it. She also ordered a large orange juice and it was $4.99 - what a rip off. Did they drive to Florida to get them and hand squeeze the oranges themselves? I think not.

    (1)
  • Jim K.

Excellent breakfast options, and very tasty. Only complaint is that we were seated close to other customers. 1/4 of the restaurant was occupied and we were all in the same section making it noisey.

    (4)
  • Jake P.

Absolute best french toast I've ever had and the butter syrup was so so amazing. It's perfectly centered in the heart of the historic downtown in a quaint little town in North Carolina.

  • Katie T.

Read the reviews on here, so I decided to eat breakfast here. The place was decorated nice w/ your usual coffee/bfast decor. I liked their red coffee cups. The coffee was a light roast so not strong enough for me. I ordered the "Bun & Sum"; 2 eggs over easy, bacon & a cinnamon roll. I asked for my bacon to be medium soft not crispy. When I got it, it was hard and cold. The smokey flavor was the only thing good about it. The cinnamon roll was cut in half and barely warm?! Really?! I was looking forward to it too:( My eggs were the only thing that turned out decent. Guess you can't screw that up. Must have been a bad day..Mondays usually are for some ppl.

It's true, the French toast is AMAZING!!!! Do not forget their baked goods. We took home a pecan roll and an apple cinnamon roll. It was absolutely amazing!

Hit or miss. Ate here a few years ago and had a great meal. Recently had breakfast. Had the breakfast burrito and was about as palatable as one of those microwave burritos you buy at a gas station quickmart. Probably won't eat here again. Not worth the crowd which I don't understand , crowds usually indicate good food/service.

Delicious!! We are visiting the area from Raleigh, but originally from NJ and are big breakfast place people! We have high expectations. Well, they were met! Thanks to previous reviews, we had an idea that this place was good. And they were right! We read about the awesome French toast...but in an effort to eat more healthy and balanced, I went with oatmeal. It was very good! And my kids had eggs and sausage with toast great serving amount for the price. They also shared a cinnamon roll that was finger licking good! I'm a coffee girl, and they didn't disappoint. Very good and rich flavor. The friendly waitress said they used their own beans. Yum! All around great breakfast to start our sight-seeing day!

Fantastic breakfast. I had the suburban with bacon, scrambled eggs, cheese potatoes and a biscuit. I added sausage gravy. I would recommend for sure.

Great southern-style breakfast. Southern hospitality. Just moved here from Maryland and couldn't be more pleased with the courteous and charming atmosphere.

A good friend and long-time New Bern local recommended Baker's for breakfast. It opened in the mid 2000's by Mennonites, they're all about country cooking. It's kind of like Cracker Barrel, but far better. I ate a LOT of food there. We each had some chocolate milk, but I put away some eggs, pancakes, sausage, and bacon. Do not forget their signature butter syrup either! So good! If we hadn't been full to the brim, we certainly would have taken advantage of the selections from their bakery, but there was no room left in our stomachs. Service was fantastic. Our waitress was super sweet and everyone there had smiles on their faces as they went about taking care of their customers.

Good, hot food. Good prices. Service was a little slow, waitress could have benefited by a little help, otherwise thumbs up!

Great place. I always go for lunch on Sundays. Food isn't priced too bad and it's great. Desserts look really good, but I don't need to be eating that. Service is great, but there may be about a 5 minutes wait on Sundays.

  • Juan L.

Visited it because I heard some good things about. I expected it to be good, but to be honest it blew me away! Everything on my plate was awesome! I even told our server that. I'm definitely coming back. I'll be a regular.

This place was so good. For breakfast! French toast is amazing and the cinnamon rolls and cheese biscuits are to die for! No longer owned by Mennonites but the food is still amazing!

  • Jessica W.

Great place for kids! Friendly, patient, accommodating staff. Not super speedy service but that's not what you come to this kind of place for. Homey and unique decorations keep the kids occupied and they also have coloring placemats and crayons. The kids menu has great selections but because my kids aren't big breakfast eaters we decided to share a big adult meal together. They brought extra plates without asking and the fruit was fresh and delicious. The coffee was good and I love the mugs they serve it in. Wanted to buy one but 10.95 is a little pricey for me. The Dutch potatoes are a little spicy but otherwise everything was exactly the way you would expect. They also have really special delicious syrup, makes everything you put it on taste like dessert! They also have a nice bakery case at the front. There were a couple flies flying around, but that's the only negative thing I could see.

  • Matthew B.

The best French toast I've ever had. It was soft on the inside, crispy on the outside, and the butter syrup is delicious. Some of the reviews of this place are odd - making me think it's possibly under new management? There are no Amish/Mennonites working here - and no reference to anything of the sort.

  • Mike R.

The food was great. Everything from the sweet potato biscuits to the French Toast to the perfectly cooked bacon. The prices are good, the service was friendly and prompt and the overall setting is very cool. We will be back!

  • Alex C.

We have eaten here a few times, my husband loves the french toast and syrup. The food is nothing special. All things that can be made from home, but it is nice to go out. The thing that makes me hate this place is the service. There is a specific waitress who is rude to all her customers and just doesn't seem to like her job. You also never know how your food will come out depending on who is serving you. The pastry items may or may not be heated up, you may get them before you eat or after, and on occasion, you might not even get what you order. My advice to the owners: hire adults and get rid of the young staff!

  • Travis P.

I ate here today for the first time and was very impressed. The French toast was the best I have ever had. The sugar butter they provided was delicious. The dutch potatoes were very good as well, very rich, creamy, and great texture. The bacon was ok, I wasn't blown away. The eggs I thought were subpar compared with the rest of the meal. The service was great, very prompt and friendly. I would defiantly return and I recommend this place to anyone looking for a good breakfast.

  • Rebecca H.

We went here with some friends while in town for a wedding. Very disappointed. The waitress was terrible and screwed up my order. I asked for sausage patties, I got links. I also asked for whole wheat French toast, it was white bread. She also didn't not understand the concept of putting real milk in your coffee and offered us more imitation creamer. My friend ordered an egg sandwich that had no egg on it when it came out. She blankly asked "oh did you want an egg on that?" Really??!!! We also waited way too long for our food to come out and half the party was served well before the other half. The food was ok nothing special. If it wasn't the only place in town for breakfast I don't know that it would get such raving reviews. Anyway, I was disappointed.

This was not our first choice for breakfast this morning but am glad we came. We had the country fried steak with eggs and a cheese biscuit along with the Dutch potatoes, bacon and toast. Like other reviews, the eggs were the low point of our meal. I wanted soft scrambled while my wife just wanted scrambled. We got the same set of eggs and they appeared to be folded and then sliced, picky I know but were not good. Now the rest made up for it. The steak was ok, nothing special. The bacon had a great smoke flavor and the Dutch potatoes were cheesy creamy goodness. The staff was nice and the atmosphere was warm and pleasant. Prices were reasonable for the food portions. I will come back to try a number of other options on the menu.

My family went there for lunch and we were all pleased with the food. It's not exceptional by any means but it was pleasing. I had a turkey salami croissant. Other than putting green peppers on it, which did not "work" with a croissant sandwich, it was decent. The croissant itself is a stand alone product--flaky and wonderful tasting. I ordered a variety of desserts to try since they were so inexpensive. The spice cake was excellent, and only a dollar for a huge slice. The raspberry tart was "ok" nothing great but decent, the chocolate pie needed work as they used manufactured whipped topping and a drizzle of Hershey syrup on top which ruined it for me. Yuck. The apple pie had absolutely no sugar or butter flavor to it. It was exceptionally disappointing. The apple tart was really good but apples again did not have enough sugar/brown sugar or nutmeg/cinnamon flavor to it. The pastry was great though. Oh, and I expected everyone to be dressed in black. No one was. The staff were all quite young and very friendly, albeit the service was just a tad bit on the slow side. We were in no hurry though so that does not affect this rating at all.

Awesome place, we sat upstairs - which was new and I liked it much better. Not as much hustle and bustle as downstairs. The food was good not great with the exception of the french toast and butter maple syrup (YUM!). The eggs were edible but that is the best compliment (time to step up your egg game "Baker's"). Pies and cinnamon rolls are great. We would definitely go back, maybe for lunch or dinner though.

I love this place for breakfast. I buy loaves of their bread and take it home because I love it so much. They make French Toast from the homemade bread.

Left standing at the door, middle of the afternoon. They werenot busy. Entire front staff involved with bakery goods. Three other employees walked by while we were left standing. True arrogance to not want to seat a customer when there were plenty of seats available.

I ran upon this place while working in the New Bern area last week. I wanted a quick bite and walked by this restaurant which seemed to have a good crowd so I ventured in. The front waiting area is perfectly placed due to the locale of the baked goods counter. While standing at the front, one is surrounded by the wonderfully smelling and scrumptious looking cookies, cakes, and bars. I am not sure what this place is known for but I will speak from my experience. I got "the Melts' sandwich that is turkey with melted gouda with lettuce, tomato, mayo or spicy mustard. It comes with your choice of bread and choice of side. I got this and added a baked cookie for a take-out lunch. The customer service was ok and the staff I did run into were pleasant. The atmosphere seemed nice and was decorated with historic pics of New Bern and had the trademark rug that New Bern is the Home of Pepsi Cola. When I bit into my sandwich, I was not happy. It was dry, and only had the turkey and gouda, no fixings, no mayo, no mustard. :( The chips that I ASSUMED (yes, I am well aware of what happens when you assume) were going to be restaurant homemade chips were in fact, Ruffle's. The cookie was ok but nothing special. Perhaps it is best to go in for breakfast or brunch but lunch....not my best choice.

Really great spot for breakfast. We had the French toast and the Hungry Farmer. Everything was excellent, but highest recommendation for the French toast.

I have eaten here before and was very satisfied. Their breakfast is good. However, today's lunch was a different story. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and my husband ordered the roast beef sandwich. My chicken salad (the little that they actually put on the sandwich) had no grapes or nuts as advertised, and it tasted horrible. The bread tasted like it had been sitting under heat lamps for hours. My husbands meal tasted like cardboard. We were there for over an hour, and our waitress never once came by to refill our drinks. The only time we saw our waitress, was when she took our order (which took 15 minutes after being seated) and when we asked for the check. It was not busy today, or I would have a little more understanding as to why we waited so long. I am usually like Mikey and will eat anything, but this was bad. Their Lays potato chips were good though!

The S.O took me to Bakers Square for our first official breakfast as official S.O (bf) and S.O (gf). I was slightly hung over and he kept raving about the maple syrup butter something or other and also the pastries. Apparently, he frequented this place when he lived in New Bern so I gave in. I'm not a huge breakfast fan, so I got the turkey sandwich - it was ok, nothing to write home about. He got the french toast with this famed maple syrup butter something or other and loved it. The real draw here is the great service from the Mennonites. Yes, Mennonites- yes, kind of like the Amish - complete with simple dresses and bonnets. So casually drawing is this place, I just want to sit, eat, drink, and read the very apropos chick lit novel Mennonite in a Little Black Dress

I live in New Bern & we take our guests here for breakfast. Never had a complaint. Their French Toast is to die for...along with the buttersyrup! Want less wait time on the weekends?... If there are more than 4 in your group, split up, you'll be seated much faster. The Farmer's Breakfast is very popular as are the omelets. I am sorry to say I have never had their cinnamon rolls, but after reading some of their reviews, it will be my next purchase there!

    (5)
  • Susan F.

I am going to start this review with my only criticism: The eggs are terrible! Now, on to the real review! I do NOT know what in God's name these blessed Amish broads put in the apple butterish syrup they give you on the waffles and pancakes... but MY GOD! That stuff is like liquid crack! I am obsessed. I MUST have it again or I fear I may go into withdrawals! Now, the cinnamon rolls... OH the cinnamon rolls! They are delicious and buttery and... just amazing! You know how sometimes a cinnamon roll will rip you off? How the inside or a certain section will be dry. Not here! No way, the entire thing is covered and filled with melty goodness. I can gaurantee I ate 1500 calories in one meal and I would do it again! I can't give them 5 because of the crappy eggs! Sorry!

The place to go for breakfast, anytime. And the buttery syrup... DEVINE!

Bakers Square is now call Bakers Kitchen and is under new ownership - they are such wonderful and nice people. And they have done amazing things with this place!!! The food is DELICIOUS! You have to get the cinnamon rolls (amazing) and the french toast with the syrup is wonderful as well. I highly recommend going here! You're missing out if you don't :)

    (5)
  • Glorvina C.

Yes, please get here early or you'll have to wait to try their DELICIOUS butter syrup!! Service is slow, but that's because everything's made to order, or they're just understaffed in the kitchen. Try their pies and pastries, too! Just like homemade! If you're on a diet, eat elsewhere :p

I keep remembering this place being better than it really is. I think it's all the rave reviews it gets from tourists, that is starting to cloud my better judgment. Of course, this place is in a town where there's only a Waffle House and IHOP (which I DO NOT recommend), so I guess it's somewhat of a winner by default. Anyhow, my husband and I gave it a go again after dropping the kids off at school (also, there was no wait or crowd on a Tuesday morning). Having been to Baker's Kitchen a few times before, I decided against their popular Hungry Farmer entree -- which includes bacon or sausage & hashbrown casserole or oven potatoes. The bacon is hard, thick-sliced and kind of bland. The hashbrown casserole, while good, is often served at or below room temperature, which gives it even more of a 'tart' taste. Instead, I opted for what Baker's Kitchen does best -- 2 slices of french toast. I also added 2 scrambled eggs (which are $1.00 a piece a la carte). I also ordered a water with lemon, which came out as tap water with no lemon. Free is free, I guess! My husband ordered the pancake stack with two scrambled eggs. What arrived was two orders of french toast. The waitress came back and said, "Oh, I guess I got just happy with the french toast button this morning!" She put the pancake order in and it wasn't a huge deal. But, it was kind of odd, because she did write it down. The french toast, pancakes and their famous butter syrup were wonderful as usual, but the eggs where horrific. I don't know if it's a new egg, a new cook, a new preparation method or what, but the eggs were bland, rubbery, and slimy. I almost wondered if they are using powdered eggs or egg beaters, simply because they just did not taste like any natural egg that I've had before. My husband had to put Texas Pete on his and I pretty much just choked mine down. I love eggs, so that was an odd experience for me. Anyway, so, the egg experience made our breakfast a little less wonderful, especially since we paid a total of $4 to have the added on to our french toast and pancakes. Bottom line: Baker's Kitchen serves an average breakfast. In New Bern, it's probably the best, but that's not saying a lot for a small town of 20,000 people. Truthfully, if Waffle House could replicate the butter syrup, you'd probably have just as good of odds going there. The service is so-so and it's not worth fighting the crowds on the weekends, so if you go, go on a weekday. At the very least AVOID THE EGGS!

Ode to the Amish, who really know how to whip up a tasty breakfast. Cinnamon rolls the size of your hand slathered with icing, cookies that probably contain 600 calories each, pies, biscuits and various other breads readily available for consumption...what's not to love here other than the increase in your thighs that will occur upon frequenting this place too often. Here's a tip. Stick with the breakfast. Lunch and Dinner are good but not great. If you're looking for a traditional American style breakfast, you can't go wrong here. And when you're done and the guilt ensues, walk off some of those calories by checking out Mitchell Hardware a couple blocks over. Eclectic and full of surprises.

The rolls and other baked goods were extremely dry. Burger was okay, but you cannot get a good burger in North Carolina due to state law dictating that they cook it medium or well done.

Ate lunch there today had hamburger steak asked before ordering if it was fresh or frozen hamburger patties was told fresh but when I got my order that was not the case the patties were pre molded frozen patties. I do not eat pre frozen patties. When paying for my lunch I told the cashier of my displeasure with my food he left I assume to talk to management came back and offered me a baked good I declined and was charged for the food I was unable to eat. The head waitress and another waitress heard what I was saying and came over to ask me what happened after explaining what happened they went to talk to management and had my money returned to me. These young ladies did a good job trying to remedy the situation but as far as I am concerned this was the managers job and he never once spoke to me I own a business and if he was my manager I would fire him. The situation should have handled immediately and it wasn't I feel like the waitresses had to talk the management into giving me back my money.

A definite breakfast stop when in new bern. Try anything that comes with the delicious butter syrup - you won't be sorry. Would have been 5 stars but coffee is below average.

Breakfast is good, French Toast was a must, with their special syrup. Service could have been better.

It was fine, but nothing to write home about and nothing there that I can't get anywhere else or have to go back for.

We visited The Baker's Square on a Saturday morning a few months ago after several co-workers recommended it to me. Our party of two was seated right away at about 9 am, which surprised me because I had heard there was often a long wait on the weekends. Not the case when we went, there were several tables open and a few tables just leaving. The decor was very plain and the waiter was very quiet, I don't think he spoke more than 2 or 3 words to us the entire time we dined - not a complaint, just an observation. I ordered a veggie omelet which was very bland and the veggies were undercooked (basically raw). My husband enjoyed his omelet (The Baker's Omelet) which was filled with several different cheeses, meats and vegetables - his veggies were cooked fine, so there was definitely an inconsistency between our two dishes. The omelets each came with a slice of homemade bread which I really enjoyed. We also ordered a cinnamon roll which was about the size of a saucer and very sweet, soft and perfectly delicious - highly recommend if you're into super-sweet, cinnamon breakfast pastries - but do yourself a favor and split it with someone you like. I think I would have gone into a sugar-coma if I ate the whole thing. Looking back at the reviews, I really wish we had tried the french toast or pancakes (and that's what most people in the restaurant were ordering - they must've been in the know) since that's apparently their claim to fame. We purposefully didn't because I was dying to try the cinnamon roll and I didn't want to overdose on sweet carbs (silly me!!). Even though my husband enjoyed his omelet, it's hard for me to recommend one since mine was so unappetizing. The coffee was of Folgers/Maxwell House quality. Bottom line: Decent local breakfast place, inexpensive prices, unobtrusive service, spotty quality. Try the cinnamon roll.

Went here with a friend on Sunday morning. No parking close by, which seems typical of downtown New Bern. The wait to get in was long but we were given drinks while we waited. My friend's glass had pink lipstick on it which she didn't notice until she'd already drank some of the juice. She asked for and was given a new glass when we were seated. We both got the Suburban. It was good. The toast was really good. They must bake the bread themselves. It was not like any store bought bread I'd ever tasted. Service was good. Plenty of refills. Will be back.

The Bakers Square is a tradition when dropping off our kids at Camp Seagull/Seafarer. The breakfast pastries there are amazing. The cinnamon rolls are as big as my hand.

Usually very good, always packed on the weekend - atmosphere is okay. We had breakfast this morning and I was disappointed in my meal - the omelet was ordered with onions, mushrooms and tomatoes - and it did, only the egg was wrapped around raw ingredients with sliced cheese melted on top. Grits had no flavor. i hope this was just an off day.

Great breakfast! Had the French Toast... and it was really good, almost too much food to eat for breakfast. and the pastries all look great.

I went to The Baker's Square for my first time with a group of seven. We liked the homey decor and the friendly service, but our food was very hit-or-miss. My 9 year old niece's bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwhich arrived without eggs. Just bacon and cheese on a dry biscuit. Yep. She is very shy, and didn't want us to send it back to the kitchen, (we tried to assure to her that she would get another one, but she just didn't want to call attention to herself) so she insisted on eating it as-is. I had something called a 'Hungry Farmer's Breakfast' (I think) that was supposed to be eggs, pancakes, meat and hashbrowns. I asked for cheese to be added to my eggs. My breakfast arrived without the cheese I had asked for (although they remembered to put it on my bill), and without the hashbrowns. I had to ask for them to bring me the rest of my food. My sister ordered a soup and salad. The soup, I think it was supposed to be chicken noodle, was inedible. It really looked like a cup of water with a macaroni noodle in it, just unbelieveable. The lettuce in her salad was dirty, so she literally had nothing in front of her that she could eat. She had to change her order entirely, she ended up with a yogurt-granola-fruit parfait. Where Baker's Square excells is with their friendly service, and with their baked desserts. Even with all of the mistakes, our server really did her best to make everything right for us. A gentleman (possibly the manager or owner) stopped by our table frequently to see if we needed anything. Anything sweet that our group ordered (pancakes, cinnamon rolls, pie) was superb. I won't be back, but if you would like to give it a try I would recommend stopping in for dessert and coffee.

This restaurant is owned and run by Mennonites. The owner's wife is Canadian :) YEA!! The food here is TOPS! Everything from 2 huge slices of home made fresh bread slathered with butter and jam, to the heavenly cinnamon rolls it is all home made. I have been there several times and that is our go to place when we have company. Do not miss out on the chance to treat yourself to some wonderful food, served to you by sweet and caring staff.

I LOVE THIS PLACE FOR BREAKFAST!!! If you have never been make sure your first time there you get the FRENCH TOAST! The syrup-sauce is amazing (can't really call it syrup cause it's not made out of syrup). The lunch is good. Haven't made for dinner though. I've been told by others it's delicious too. All the bread is made fresh and the baked goods. I'm really going to miss this place when we move. Beware the weekends are packed!!

The past few times I've been in New Bern, I've visited this little cafe with my sister. Have been here for breakfast only. Enjoyed both times. I've found that service tends to be iffy tho. Not necessarily bad, but kind of stand off 'ish. Maybe it's still a bit early in the morning to be chatty, but that certainly can help your tip! Also doesn't hurt to be quick with the coffee refills. Have tried the potatoes which also can be iffy. Twice they were excellent, once they were mediocre. The pastries always are delicious! I've tried the cinnamon rolls, & the pecan rolls and have loved them (make sure you get yours warmed up) ...with a cup of coffee to off set the sugar, you are golden! This seems to be a local hangout in the morning. Last time I was in, a couple of New Bern police officers were having breakfast and the owner came over and chatted with them about a vagrant problem. They were quick to say they would check it out. An extra star for the New Bern boys in blue!

I've eaten here quite a few times and have never been disappointed. They have excellent service and while they have a limited menu, it's all great food. Everything is fresh and prepared in house. Their brownies are sinful and I'm not even a big fan of brownies. :)

This is th ebest place in New Bern if you are looking for a full breakfast. The butter syrup served with the French Toast and Pancakes is wonderful. The bakery items are equally devine and as many past posts have commented - very sweet and large. But if you are looking for a lunch or dinner - try elsewhere. It is mainly southern style cooking and breakfast is definately their specialty. Yes - you will have to wait int line for your breakfast...it is worth the wait. Try Chelsea's for dinner or Captain Ratty's.

This restaurant is so sweet. It's run by Mennonites I believe. (Girls wear dresses and little white caps on there heads). and the food is very fresh and hot every time I've been there. They make there bread and pastries fresh there every morning, so it always smells like your grandmas kitchen. I give this a 5 star, 'cause the chef comes out to greet us each time we go, and the wait staff are quick to fill those coffee cups. They serve Breakfast ,Lunch and dinner but my favorite is the breakfast. They have this syrup butter they make that comes out hot that you drizzle over those GI-NORMOUS pancakes. If you like grits, they have it to. You HAVE to try there Cinnamon rolls or Pecan rolls. That'll jump start your morning for sure.
